内容简介:
The Civil War battle waged on September 17, 1862, at Antietam Creek, Maryland, was one of the bloodiest in the nation's history: in this single day, the war claimed nearly 23,000 casualties. In Landscape Turned Red, the renowned historian Stephen Sears draws on a remarkable cache of diaries, dispatches, and letters to recreate the vivid drama of Antietam as experienced not only by its leaders but also by its soldiers, both Union and Confederate. Combining brilliant military analysis with narrative history of enormous power, Landscape Turned Red is the definitive work on this climactic and bitter struggle.

原文赏析:
...unless the states in rebellion returned to the Union within the next hundred days, on January 1, 1863, all persons held in bondage in those states “shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free. . . .” Beyond whatever other purpose, the dead of Antietam had died to make men free.
That was a transcending purpose, a revolution in the affairs of the Republic. As Lincoln would tell the Congress, “The fiery trial through which we pass, will light us down, in honor or dishonor, to the latest generation. . . . In giving freedom to the slave, we assurefreedom to the free—honorable alike in what we give, and what we preserve. We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last, best hope of earth.”
One of the regiments the Tigers faced, the 12th Massachusetts, was a world apart in reputation. It had gone off to war soon after Fort Sumter to the cheers of blue-blooded Bostonians, with Colonel Fletcher Webster, son of Daniel Webster, riding at its head. The 12th included a good many staunch abolitionists in its ranks, and it had popularized an old revivalist hymn with new words set to it that told how John Brown’s body lay a-mouldering in the grave but his soul was marching on. It was a superb marching song, and became widely popular in the Army of the Potomac. (General McClellan found the lyrics objectionable and tried to ban it, but the men, especially the New Englanders, sang it anyway.) One day in Washington the poet Julia Ward Howe heard the soldiers singing it and was inspired to...
The toll in the Army of the Potomac came to 2,108 dead, 9,540 wounded, and 753 missing, 12,401 men in all, 25 percent of those who went into action. Confederate casualties would never be precisely reckoned, but the best estimate of Lee’s losses on September 17 is 1,546 dead, 7,752 wounded, and 1,018 missing, for a total of 10,318, 31 percent of those on the firing lines. The combined casualties for those twelve hours of combat came to 22,719. No single day of this or any other American war would surpass that fearful record.
Nor do these figures reflect a true count of the dead and wounded. There is no doubt that a good many of the 1,771 men listed as missing were in fact dead, buried uncounted in unmarked graves where they fell. Civilians returning to their farms around Sharpsburg in the f...
